In Pictures: Right-wing Israeli protestors march in Jerusalem

While pro-peace activists called on the government to stop its offensive against Gaza, right-wingers called for the destruction of Hamas.

An estimated 200 people attended a right-wing Israeli protest in the city center of Jerusalem on Monday.

Organised by a Facebook group, its stated goals were "to march from Zion Square to Damascus Gate and ‘Show the Arabs of East Jerusalem who's boss'". 

Activists were aware of the event in advance and showed up to defy it. 

“We felt like it was our duty to come here as residents of the city," peace activist Aviv Tatarsky from Jerusalem told MEE. “We needed to do whatever we could do to make sure other voices are heard, and to ensure that no Palestinians are attacked.’ 

The opposing sides shouted slogans at each other across a barricade formed by police. A heavy police force, including agents on rooftops and horse-mounted police, was present at the event.

Earlier this month, 200 Israelis rampaged through Jerusalem shouting "Death to Arabs," following the funeral of three killed settlers. Arabs protested days later in the city in response to the suspected revenge killing of a Palestinian teen.
