37 million tonnes of rubble left in Gaza to be cleared: UN

Thirty seven million tonnes of debris and rubble now litter the Gaza Strip as a result of Israel's bombardment, according to the UN.

“We estimated 37 million tons of debris, or about 300 kilos of debris per square meter,” said Pehr Lodhammar, an official with UNMAS, the UN agency responsible for mine clearance.

He told a press conference that, assuming the use of around a hundred trucks, it “would take 14 years to clear".

Much of the rubble was likely to include unexploded ordinance, noting that around 10 percent of all munitions used in such conflicts tended not to explode.
