Evening recap

Our live blog will shortly be closing until tomorrow morning.

Here are some of the day's key developments:

  • The death toll in Gaza has surged to 54,772 since the start of Israel’s assault on 7 October, with 125,834 people wounded, the Palestinian Ministry of Health said in its latest update on Saturday.

  • At least 75 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli airstrikes across the Gaza Strip since dawn, according to medical sources speaking to Al Jazeera.

  • Hospitals across the Gaza Strip have received at least 95 bodies and treated 304 wounded in the last 48 hours, the Palestinian Ministry of Health in Gaza said on Saturday.

  • Gaza’s Health Ministry has announced that its hospitals only have enough fuel to last three days, according to Al Jazeera.

  • The US-supported Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) says it paused all aid distribution on Saturday, citing what it described as “direct threats” from Hamas that endangered staff and civilians. A senior Hamas official, speaking to Reuters, denied any knowledge of the alleged threats aimed at the US-funded initiative.

  • Tens of thousands took to the streets of Rome on Saturday to protest the ongoing Israeli war on Gaza, in a massive demonstration led by opposition groups accusing Italy’s government of being complicit in Israel’s assault.

  • Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman has used his Eid al-Adha address to denounce Israel’s war on Gaza and renew calls for a peaceful resolution for the Palestinian people.

  • Israeli forces have recovered the body of Nattapong Pinta, the last remaining Thai captive in Gaza.
