France to bolster Cyprus after drone attack on UK base

France plans to deploy anti-missile and anti-drone systems to Cyprus after drones targeted a British air base on the island, the semi-official Cyprus News Agency (CNA) reported on Tuesday.

CNA said Paris would also send a frigate, adding that President Emmanuel Macron informed Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulides of the move early on Tuesday. A Cypriot government source, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed the report, Reuters said. France’s defence ministry did not immediately comment.

The planned deployment follows two drone incidents on Monday targeting RAF Akrotiri, a British base on the island. In the first incident, an Iranian-made Shahed drone crashed on the runway, causing limited damage. Later, air defences intercepted two additional drones.
