Maersk vessel targeted by missile en route to Saudi Arabia

Danish shipping company Maersk said its container ship Maersk Gibraltar was targeted by a missile while travelling from Salalah, Oman, to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The crew and vessel were reported safe, but Maersk said “we are still working to establish the facts of the incident.”

"The recent attacks on commercial vessels in the Bad al-Mandab Strait are extremely concerning. The current situation puts seafarer lives at risk and is unsustainable for global trade," Maersk said.

The Houthis have said they will target ships linked to Israel or travelling to the country in response to the war in Gaza. Maersk Gibraltar is listed as a Hong Kong-flagged vessel, and according to public data, didn’t recently appear to have made any stops in Israel.

The company called for “political action” to ensure the safety of commercial vessels.
