Turkey's coup attempt: The story so far in social media

It was a night that rocked Turkey - and the world - as elements within the military tried to seize power. Here's how events played out on Twitter

Within minutes of tanks rolling out onto Turkish streets late on the night of Friday 15 July, #TurkeyCoup was the top trending term worldwide ...

Some news outlets asked if staging a coup against an elected government was treason ...

 

 

... while others took a more enthusiastic approach:

 

 

US right-wingers and Egyptian liberals appeared to share one thing in common, namely that democracy only works if you agree with who’s been elected:

Meanwhile others were quick to pick up on the double standards presented by self-declared liberals:

 

 

But Turks took a different view altogether. Both supporters and critics of President Recep Tayyip Erdogan united to denounce the coup and support their fragile democracy ...

... while some social media users took to Twitter with the hashtag #TurkeyWithErdogan to show support for their elected leader:

Indeed, reaction against the coup was so strong that it was not long before #idamistiyorum ("I want the death penalty’) became the top trending term in Turkey itself ...

... although other users insisted that the soldiers backing the coup were merely carrying out orders and should not have to pay the price themselves. Soon the hashtag #askerimedokunma ("don’t touch the soldiers") began trending:

Eventually the coup attempt was defeated as Turks answered President Erdogan's call, made via the Facetime app, to take to the streets. Some believed that his success was due to his choice of phone ...
