Thousands of people gathered at rallies throughout France and in cities worldwide on Wednesday evening to condemn the earlier attack in Paris that left 12 people dead.

People lit candles and held pens and pencils aloft in a symbolic act meant to signify a dedication to free speech, which many said Wednesday's attack threatened.

Vigils were held in cities from Canada to Argentina, with small gatherings also held in Tunisia and Egypt.
