10 women killed in fresh Mediterranean shipwreck

Latest sinking comes as warmer summer weather leads to huge upsurge in the numbers of people attempting the risky crossing

At least 10 people died after an inflatable dinghy loaded with migrants began sinking in the Mediterranean on Thursday, the Italian coastguard said.

All of those who drowned were women, Italian media reported. 

The coastguard said on Twitter that 107 people had been rescued from the stricken vessel and 10 bodies had been recovered.

Translation: The coastguard has rescued 107 migrants from a half-sunk raft. 10 bodies were recovered.
At the end of the operation, the coastguard said that a total of 116 people had been rescued.

As the weather in the Mediterranean improves with the coming of summer, there has been a huge increase in the numbers of people attempting to cross the Mediterranean to Italy.

The Italian coastguard said on Sunday that it had rescued over 3,300 people during 26 separate operations in the Mediterranean over the weekend.
