US officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, told Reuters it was too early to say who was responsible for the attack.

Local sources claimed multiple drones were involved in the attack with "some coming from Iraq-Syria border".

No one has yet claimed responsibility for the attack on the base, which is located in close proximity to Iranian-backed militias in the area.

US troops have come under drone attack by such groups in the past.

The latest such spat of assaults took place in July in northwest Syria. The US responded with air strikes on Iranian-backed militias in Syria and Iraq.

The Syrian government and its allies have repeatedly said US troops have no reason to be at the base, which was established in 2016 during the fight against the Islamic State group.

The US outpost is situated at a strategic crossing point along Syria's al-Tanf border with Iraq and Jordan.
