Netanyahu commits 'a bloodbath in Gaza' to save himself

Former Israeli negotiator Daniel Levy says the prime minister has now been exposed in front of the Israeli public as the real obstacle to a ceasefire in Gaza. At least 400 people have been killed after a surprise Israeli attack on Gaza in the early hours of Tuesday, shattering the uneasy peace that's held since January. Israel’s government vowed to continue escalating these military attacks, saying it’s in response to Hamas’ refusal to negotiate an extension of the first phase of the agreement, which was meant to be replaced by the start of a more comprehensive second phase in early March. That phase would require a complete withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza. But is this the real reason for this morning’s attack? Or is there a much more cynical explanation - one tied to the political fate of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu? This week on The Big Picture Podcast, we speak to Daniel Levy, the president of the US/Middle East Project and a former Israeli peace negotiator.
