A Palestinian man was shot dead by Israeli troops in the West Bank on Wednesday, after stabbing and wounding three soldiers, according to Israeli sources.

"A soldier was seriously wounded after being stabbed in the neck near Shilo" settlement, a source told AFP, saying the Palestinian attacker had been "eliminated".

He said two other soldiers had also been wounded and one was in moderate condition.

The seriously wounded soldier received medical attention at the scene before being airlifted to a Jerusalem hospital.

The incident took place at around 10am (0800 GMT) outside the Shilo settlement, on the main road linking Ramllah and Nablus.

Israel's emergency services confirmed paramedics had responded to a call about a stabbing near the entrance to the Maale Levona settlement near Shilo.

"Paramedics are transferring a young man of around 20 to (Jerusalem's) Shaarei Tzedek hospital in serious condition with a stab wound to his upper body," a statement said.

Tensions have been running particularly high in Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territories over recent months, with a series of similar incidents having taken place in which soldiers have been attacked.
