Jordanian MPs submit motion to ban Donald Trump from visiting Jordan
More than 50 Jordanian parliamentarians have called for their country to ban US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump from entering Jordan.
The call came in the aftermath of Trump’s comments last week about banning Muslims from entering the United States, which resulted in widespread condemnation from other US political and international figures.
The motion by the 51 Jordanian MPs, who called Trump a racist, was raised with the speaker of parliament Atef al-Tarawneh on Sunday.
The MPs, who represent a third of the parliament, said: “We express our condemnation of racist statements made by Trump against Muslims, and we call on addressing the US embassy in Amman to express our rejection of these statements.”
In a statement made to the Anadolu Agency, MP Bassam al-Batoush said that Trump’s comments “promote extremism and terrorism and harm the friendly relations between Jordan and the US, and the overall US relations with the Arab and Islamic worlds.”
Batoush did not reveal what the subsequent procedures following the submission of the motion will be.
Trump’s comments did not go down well in other parts of the world either.
His famous Turnberry golf course in Ayrshire, Scotland, has had the right to host The Open tournament revoked after a decision by golf’s governing body, which is also based in Scotland.
