The female mesaharati: Dalal Abdel Kader keeps alive a decades-old Ramadan tradition

Every year during the holy month of Ramadan, Dalal Abdel Kader picks up her brother's old drums and begins to chant to wake her neighbours up for their final pre-dawn meal or ‘suhoor’ before the start of their daily fast.

Dalal’s decision to continue this dwindling ancient custom is particularly inspiring as the role of a ‘mesaharati’ is typically dominated by males.
