Syrians come together in protest to mark 12th anniversary of civil war

Thousands of Syrians gathered in the opposition-held northwest city of Idlib on Wednesday to mark the 12th anniversary of the beginning of anti-government demonstrations in the country, which later devolved into a devastating war.

Demonstrators waved revolutionary flags and held banners that read “the people demand the fall of the regime” and “freedom and dignity for all Syrians”.

The Assad government’s crackdown on protests began on 15 March 2011 and descended into an armed conflict that cost the lives of hundreds of thousands of Syrians and displaced millions, both inside and outside the country
